Announcing Lichess Titled Arena 5

@jigsaw For that strategy to work you would need a 2nd Magnus player. Penguin might count, but Nakamura might suddenly come and take it no matter what the chess.com contract says.
How would you need a 2nd Magnus player? I'm pretty sure sooner or later MC isn't going to have the time to participate in a title arena on lichess and people are going to try their damn hardest to win that big fat first place prize.

There is no such thing as strategy to this by the way. I highly doubt anyone is going to be smashing MC at this tournament for him to be coming 2nd or 3rd. By default 1st place prize will continue going up until the day he won't be participating and that BIG check will up for grabs and it will be a dog fight.

You get the point. It's going to be a joke of a tournament seeing first place prize be up at $5000 or more while 2nd place is $250. Even more of a joke if 1st place wins the tournament by 1 game or 1 point. This concept is really cringe. They should make every tournament prize pool the same each time. If winner wants to donate that money back to lichess then that's a great gesture and nothing more AND if you were to accept him donating it back to the tournament then have it evenly distributed among the top 5 places.
@jigsaw I suppose you'd rather have us deny the donations and cap the prize pool at $1,000 total.

If Magnus wins, he is free to take the money. In fact, we have to assume he will. If he doesn't, thats amazing. If Magnus doesn't win, someone who deserves it will have a nice payday. Seems like a win-win to me.
Magnus does not need the money and really don't think he even cares about a couple grand on a website. That's lunch money to him and he's got a big year ahead of him.

Just find it really cringe that he can set up a big pay day for someone when that person who wins it did not deserve such a big pay day to begin with. Magnus worked for it. He donated the money back and it should be distributed evenly to all the top 5 winners.

I don't see how people find it fair. MC is basically setting up a jackpot of a paycheck for a lucky titled player. Then 2nd place (sucks if they lose by 1 point) gets 250 bucks lol.

I just find that piling up 1st place prize to be such a monstrous pay day waters down all other prizes in the tournament. That some players can conspire to give their partner a cheap win for their win streak whenever they play and they hope to get 1st and split the prize under the table (from how big that 1st place prize will be). Also please don't bring up how titled players have way higher morals than an average joe and never cheat and how that would never be a possibility of happening.

People have suggested spreading out Magnus' winnings to all top 5 places but I have not seen a single post about how flawed this actually is. It's time I bring this up.

I'm entirely against someone winning tons of cash off of someone else's efforts. Yet 2nd-5th place doesn't benefit one bit from it and get chump change compared to 1st.
I also agree with most of people here.... First prize is far too big compared to second prize reward.
Bullet is a really specific time control that only a few titled players excel at. I think if the time control was 3 minutes or something then it wouldn't be the same top 3 winning every time, and the tournament would be more competitive.

But then you need to watch more carefully for cheats etc and the tournament will go on for longer. There really is no way to please everyone.

Chessexplained is a great choice for official coverage btw. Good job guys.
@NeverBeenTimid Your post has no relation with what I'm bringing up. It's flying right over your head. This is not about who wins or doesn't or what time control it is.

This is about 1st place prize being bumped up to the point of 2nd-5th being non existent ALL because of someone else's efforts aka MC.

If MC REALLY wanted to (but i'll find that as trolling) he would win every single one and jack up 1st place to $10,000. Anyone knows he's capable of doing that. After that he won't play the next tournament and you're telling me you'd find it fair that first place gets $10,000 and 2nd place gets $250?

The answer is simply a NO. Whether it is $3000, $250, ..., ..., etc or $5000 or $10,000. The answer is still the same.

I really hope either MC pulls out his winnings when he wins the next one (or doesn't participate at all so the prize pool can just reset), or if his winnings are re-donated that they are evenly distributed to bring up the the prize pool to all top 5 places.
you must set the maximum prize for the first place. Magnus can fill it up to 10 thousand dollars, and the person who wins in all this, clearly does not deserve it, while his rivals get for a miserable 250 dollars.
@JlGSAW the world does not revolve around you. I wasn't replying to your comment. if I was I would have @ you. I was just sharing my thoughts on the event. Relax dude.

We get it. You think prizes should be more evenly distributed. Since Penguin nearly beat MC last time I don't think your argument that he is invincible holds much weight. Also If Magnus donated the money back and said it's to go to first place then who are we to argue?
LOL at everyone here on tilt about the lichess prize fund allocation.

First, it's not about what you think is "fair" (such an irrelevant, and weak argument).

Magnus is donating his first place winnings back to the first place winner. Done.

No debate necessary, it's not your money.
