What is a "norm" ?

reading up on gm's and other titled players i see that they require rating points and norms. I take it to mean a certain score in a tourny or is it something else like beating titled players? please elaborate.
It's a mix. You need to reach a performance rating of a certain level and play a certain amount of titled players.

IIRC:
IM norm = 2450 performance playing 3 IMs/GMs and total 5 titled players.
GM norm = 2600 performance playing 3 GMs and a total of 5 titled players.

To become an IM you need 3 IM norms (standard 9 round norms) and a rating of 2400.
For GM you need 3 GM norms and a rating of 2500.
