What is the point of the King's gambit? I don't see why it is good.

Well it is not horrible. there are worse like 1 g4

Lichess stockfish seems to give -0.6 for accepted kings gambit and Nf3 as best continuation. Leela0 give whites expectation as 45% which is same expectation black has after 1. e4.

So in effect white id no worse than having black pieces. And in blitz if he knows what he is doing probably doing okay. so next lets look LC blitz stats for it
average rating
1600 54 - 43 so seems to work there
1800 50- 46 white is still better but less so
2000 47 -49 so ability to defend on fast games goes up as skills go up
2200/2500 45 - 50 black start to clearly better

Which conform that average/beginner level playing gambit pays better as being pawn down counts very littel and attacking is usually easier. Dan Heisman did recomment playing gambit to sub 2000 level fort this reason
Black can equalize simply learning 3 moves. 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 exf4.

This would put me off. Don't like this somewhat "stale" position for White.

(admittedly, some GMs win that with either color but as stated before, not my mug of beer)
What othes say about center and f file is true and it can be a good surprise if opponent expects something like the ruy lopez. To play it against a good player who is prepared to meet it might not be a good idea.
and you werer lucky to survive move eight blunder. If something is statistically bad single game does not prove anything. seems like the NMplayer was not really using his time properly. So you took him by surprise. well done
