the sadist type of player

Add a way to disable it in options, like how they have the take-back feature. Creating a new button for a pop up request in the middle of the game adds a new possibly more annoying occurrence.

Since I'm here: The sadist type of player is the one who finds anything and everything to complain about because they didn't win a chess game.
The way it can work, to avoid abuse of repeated requests for +time is really very simple and quite effective.
In settings, there is an option to either accept +time requests or to deny them. The same as take-backs.
If accepted is checked, then the pop-up appears for both players and the request is either granted or denied.
If a player has checked the box to deny all such requests, he never sees the pop-up. An automatic denial is sent. The player "thinking" he is harassing his opponent with repeated requests, only sees his pop-up and request denied, wasting his time and energy. The opponent sees nothing, never aware any request is being made, as his setting auto denies.
You all assume I am "complaining".
I make no such complaint. The feature is what it is. It is a mere technicality. Those that abuse the feature in my games get blocked. Done deal.
It's an issue of the "spirit" of chess to my mind. I feel in the interest of extending a courtesy of adding time, Lichess has missed the boat in how to best implement the feature. As it stands, the opportunity to abuse this feature is present and should be corrected.
Just as much as I'd prefer a win via checkmate vs time out, it appears the losing opponent would prefer a "time out" vs being checkmated, this ultimately boils down to an ego issue for both parties, as neither want the damning outcome logged on the profile page as to what type of win/loss it was. Obviously there will be the ones to argue this is not the case, but it is (for Some) as there would be a simple resignation and this post would not exist. The ones who know they're doomed can simply click resign but much rather run out of time as to not appear incompetent.

If you want to argue otherwise, then one question, why not just resign ?

I personally don't care about defeat I'll just resign, can't win em all. When I know I'm two moves from mate I simply want the mate rather than letting all that thinking go in vain. Simple as that. Just my perspective.
For the record, I see nothing wrong with the "disable add time" clock feature. Go for it.
Points can be made about the "mentality" of resigning or checkmate. The issue presents itself at the end of games. Some view it as trivial, others feel a sense of "insult" as a handicap is given... I can win even though you have more time, checkmate is coming".
At the same time, the issue of +time, is it can be given at any time, even at the start. Although this is not common, it is still an opportunity for someone to abuse the feature. It's happened to me more than once. Why open the feature to possible abuse?
I think a well intentioned programmer wrote the feature years ago, not realizing the potential shortcomings. Add the option, just as the take-back feature has, to disable the feature.
It's a useful feature for when your opponent ragequits with little time left on the clock: By adding them some more seconds, you'll get the chance to claim a win by opponent's disconnection - which is always more satisfactory than an ordinary win on time, isn't it? :)
I played a game that was so tense and deserved to be played through, but I was very low on time. My opponent appreciated the position, as did I, on plane with "The Mona Lisa". Instinctually they gave me a few more minutes because they wanted to see the masterpiece play through.

It was a major example of great sportsmanship, and appreciation of the game, and it was one of my first impressions of lichess.

If my opponent's character was the rule, no others would/could compete with lichess.
I want to start a group within lichess. One of our rules would be, "any time you play someone new with a '?', we would add time anytime there was a sharp position that deserved to be played through."

"Thanks for the extra minutes."

"No problem, this position deserves to be played through. Great game so far. Shame to stop it on the clock."

The amount of things something like that says about the person and about this site...are too many to list...all of them very good.

If you wanted to MAKE people think "I just found my new home", this would be one way to do it.

If you wanted to set a precedent of quality-character, sportsmanship, goodwill, good-vibes, friendship, kinfolk, family, community...this would be one way to do it.
Sometimes when I'm playing casual if I make a massive obvious mouseslip or blunder. I will reward the takebacking player with 15 extra seconds.

Also when I'm going against really good players like @funnyanimatorjimtv or CM @massimilianoferri they give me extra time which I find quite useful when I played two fianchettoed bishops on the CM. Which lead to a LOT of calculations.
