Searching for the title of a story from a German author

This is a story we studied in German class during middle school. I have very few memories about it.

I vaguely remember it was about the inhabitants of a small village who conspired against one of them for some reason. They wanted him dead or they were looking forward for him to die. They didn't hate him or anything, but they had some reason to think his death would benefit everyone financially.

Here is a detail I remember : some people of the village started wearing yellow shoes. My teacher pointed out that yellow was the color of either treason or gold, can't quite remember.

It's very hard to search this story with a search engine. All I get are results for shoe stores.

Does anyone have an idea of what story this is? Possibly knowing the title?
perhaps "Besuch der alten Dame" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt?
Dürrenmatt is great. I can also recommend „Die Physiker“.

About the book above: Yeah, this rich old lady was the poor girl-friend of this guy but she was somewhat mistreated by him. Now returning rich she made this indecent proposal. Of course it is turned down, at first...

Spoiler alert: as far as I remember it ends with a collective murder. The old lady donates and that’s it.
Confession time.

This summer I basically lost my mind. I thought I was victim of a similar story, more than thirty years after separating from a girl in primary school.

Being able to recall this play will help recover my sanity, I'm sure. Now that the story is not just in my subconscious mind, I can tell I was imagining it as plausible when it's most certainly not.

Dürrenmatt's "Der Richter und sein Henker" is absolutely one of my all time favourites.
Less absurdist than "Die Physiker" but still very captivating.
