ACWC 2020 Pairings and Match Results

Hi everyone. We have finished calculating the results of the Swiss round of ACWC 2020. The data and calculations are laid out in the following document; I encourage anyone to check the math:

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v0e7kixOLGJdmqNtPWr2R1xouklhDV5M3iORS3cgGPY

Congratulations to our Candidates @ChangeOpening, @yourself101010, @lo-ol, and @Azoha! They will be joined by the winners of the Knockout Round; pairings are as follows:

@GrohochetGrom vs @MagnusXL
@UltimateSuperPlayer vs @ChessDemon989
@PepsiNGaming vs @Kotov_Syndrome
@ODMWND vs @TheUnknownGuyReborn

There will be a one-week break in the tournament leading up to the next round. The Knockout Round will begin on Tuesday, December 1. At that point the participants will have one week to schedule and play their matches.

Note that the rules for these matches are different than for those in the Swiss. Armageddon rules apply. Check acwc.chessvariants.training/rules/2020 for specifics.
Thanks for the info and for organizing, really excited to make the next round. Quick question, why are the calculations slightly different than the standings on the Challonge page, was some different algorithm applied?

Also if it comes down to Armageddon, wondering how do we make our time offers for white? Is it only one offer per person or do we bid until lowest? If the former, must we share the offer blindy or will one person see the other's first? Also suggestions on how to play rock paper scissors online?
@MagnusXL Good question. Yes, a different algorithm was used. Challonge has some major problems with the way it calculates median-Buchholz, so we had to redo the calculations to reflect the scoring intended by the rules. I’ll explain:

For one thing, for some unknown reason, Challonge awards withdrawn players a free point for every round after they drop out. This resulted in the withdrawn players having raw scores of 5.5-6.5 without winning a game, so that anyone who matched up with them early on got a huge free bump to their Buchholz score. This was unintended by the rules and gave certain players a big advantage just from lucky pairings, so we removed that in our calculations.

The other problem is that 0-0 scores are not allowed by Challonge; it only accepts 1-0, 0.5-0.5, or 0-1. Unplayed matches are intended to be scored as 0-0, but we had to report them as 0.5-0.5. In the new calculations unplayed matches are correctly changed to 0-0 results.

These are the only two changes we made to the calculations. I apologize if it was unclear that the Challonge scoring is unofficial. If anyone has further questions, please feel free to reach out.
As for the Armageddon, you can make your offer with a TD in private message, and then the TD will announce both offers publicly so that both players can verify what the TD says. Rock paper scissors can be done in the same way (we chose it over flipping a coin specifically so that both players can verify). You can make only one time offer for white.

Also, in case it was unclear, the Knockout round is a match of 10 games. The Armageddon game only serves as a tiebreaker in case these 10 games result in a 5-5 tie. The rules have been updated to clarify that. (III.F.4)
To participants of Knockout round and ones of Candidade matches: please inform us here about time of matches. We (spectators) want to see these matches!
