Who was Stafford, after whom the Stafford gambit is called?

'Stafford' is a town in the county of Staffordshire

There are also several dogs called 'Stafford' like the Terrier

It is well-known that the Stafford Gambit is actually named after Mr. Gambit, not Stafford. I am surprised nobody in this forum knows this otherwise common knowledge.
And also this is what I mean with a "spectacular fast win": just now freshly played and mate on move 11!

And that not against a raw beginner, but against an 1863.

The Stafford gambit is a killer.

Bagged another innocent victim with the Stafford gambit. He saw he was going to lose his queen, so he resigned.
