long time controls

I was wandering why most online players prefer blitz style chess to longer games with about 45-60 min per player.
Hey Rafila, there are as many reasons as there are players.

For me, long games are serious games. They are mentally draining. I don't think it's a great idea to spend one's leisure time in deep calculation, agonizing over a position. That's a great way to burn out.

There are also practical matters. In long games, your opponent might spend 45 minutes trying to find a way out of a hopelessly lost position. Or, he might be a jerk and let the clock run out instead of resigning. This is fine in a tournament... but not online when there is nothing to be gained but a few digital rating points!

mtywdc: In all fairness, the OTB ratings are kept digitally too.

That they can't leave without resigning on OTB would be better argument.

As for playing longer games on lichess, best to find a partner who to play with - some of my unlimited games do go over a hour, though good % that is talking.

Lement: Ratings are kept digitally in OTB, but that's not the point. There is usually money at stake, or title norms. If someone wants to run down his own time in a real tournament... great!

Also, players in OTB tournies are free to leave the board if they want. You COULD run the clock down away from the board if you wanted to, but most people only do such things when protected by online anonymity.
There's an easy way around the problem of people running down the clock. On longer distance games, they could have to click that they are still playing every so often - for example, once in 10 minutes - to show they are there. Then, if they want to run down the clock whilst sitting in front of a screen, fair enough; no click = resignation after another minute...
