Visiting Lichess for the first time

@MrCharles

As far as I can tell (and remember), flux is about reducing blue light to make it easier to sleep (not really related so much to dark theme). The link you provided says:

The amount of blue light in the spectrum of light sources increases with increasing colour temperature. So far a number of studies have investigated the effects of the colour temperature of lighting on mental activity, the central nervous system and alertness. These studies have demonstrated that higher colour temperatures (7500 K versus 3000 K) are more activating from the viewpoint of mental activity level [12]. Both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems are thought to be enhanced under higher colour temperature conditions. [13] and drowsiness has been observed to be higher under lower colour temperature lighting when comparing 3000 K with 5000 K [14].

As far as it goes for me, I don't want to be drowsy while playing chess.
I agree with the majority here: I like Dark better. Also it's less of a strain on the eyes.
@farmersrice -- True, good point. (I knew that posting the link.) -- Thanks for paying attention. (Though, many of the studies there deal directly in understanding eye-strain per attention.)

And, yes, we don't want to be drowsy while playing. That's where contrast comes into play. (The other thing I was getting at is how the dark theme draws attention -- to the board in the center of the screen where play is active, with contrasted light and dark squares, versus the overall dark theme, surrounding a board of play, being easier on the eyes; in general; some people find blocked contrast ratio of more strain than an overall light theme with a more consistent [averaged] contrast ratio.)
People like change, variety. It becomes "boring" after so long viewing a light background in most all applications as viewed on the computer monitor. A dark background provides a great deal more contrast. Experimenting with wooden, marble, textured backgrounds can be entertaining and applied for any length of time.
I seriously doubt most people are "in-tune" to which background actually (after extended use) has less/more of an eye strain. Certainly, no scientific test is being undertaken. It is usually a subjective opinion, rather than anything objective.
After changing to a dark background, finding the change to be a cool one, it is natural to think something superior has been found. It really comes down to personal preferences.
Streamers will set their background to a dark theme because when the video appears on peoples light background it will stand out. People with a dark background, and a video stream has a dark background (when the screen is not maximized), how does that work out? Have they tried switching to a light background to compare?
@mdinnerspace

I have warned you before. This is your subsequent warning. I want you to go back and read your first comment in this thread.

After you read your first (obtuse) comment in this thread, I want you to read-forward, and try to think about things from other perspectives.

When you get to your last comment, #25 on Page-3 of this thread, I want you to consider what you've said. I've kept screenshots ... just in case you edit and try to change what you've said to stay in keeping with what you've said previously.

Remember what I said previously about making yourself a target?

You're making yourself a target for ridicule because you are not tracking what you have said, and why you have said it ... previously. Please pay attention to what is going on around you. You are not the only person in this world, and you are not always right (or wrong). But you do need to pay attention and put things into perspective, one way or another.

The bottom line is that when you spend a small bit of time stepping back and thinking about this, you're going to have to ask yourself some important and pertinent questions that will thus inhibit you from making stupid remarks where you are unfamiliar with things while seeking to gain attention.

After you have parsed the difference between seeking attention, and understanding the full context of your remarks, then you will be better positioned to make more respectable remarks that people will not target or ridicule you about.
My, my ! All that over a frivolous comment "serious chess players all use a white background!". LOL at MrCharles. I know well enough what I said and can see well enough your agenda with such a verbal attack. Difference is, I'm not bent out of shape by your post. The post was meant to invoke some reaction... and yours takes the prize!
As I have explained, the background chosen is a personal preference, light, dark, wood, marble etc. The choice is subjective, rarely an objective one. My posts here have mostly focused on "eye strain" and gave several references and studies. I have used a dark background on occasions, but always return to a light one. People are expressing their preferences, not slamming them for a personal choice. Instead of viewing the comment with a sideways glance, possibly it may have some jest to it, you use it as an opportunity to slam all my posts. Not very sporting. ( By giving me a "warning" is there some threat here ?)
"serious chess players all use a white background"

"As I have explained, the background chosen is a personal preference,"

Notice the "I" -- As "I" have explained. Yes. I get it. I get you. Your personal preference is "frivolous" and all others are ... not "I"

Nirvana -- Nevermind. "I" won't bother to try any further. Game-on. (How very sporting of you to continue being argumentative instead of use perspective. "I" understand, now where others have tried and failed.)

"I" understand you have nothing better to do with your time and your life and post more comments in threads about frivolous stuff than the number of games you play ;)
OK. You've made your point. It is easy enough to see your profile and observe the majority of your posts are in response to my comments in various topics and are of an attacking nature. You have an agenda, probably an old one. Since you signed up at lichess, your 1st stop was to stalk and harass. It happens now and then. I've seen it all before.

He he.. number of games I play ? I play correspondence. 5-10 games on average. I prefer to spend my time making my best quality moves, not play bullet/blitz chess which I'm the worst at. I have not desire to make any claims about the number of games played, but the few I manage to play well.

Won't bother responding to your posts in the future. Maybe take your own advice and find something better to do than follow me around.
You're not that important. The less you post, the less you see of me. Notice I haven't posted in every thread you have? Because in some places I have no interest or no comment. Opposed to trying to post in every thread possible and have an "I" informed opinion on everything. (Another reason people don't like the crap you post.)

I don't browse the forums looking for places to bother you. I just pay attention to people I follow. But when I see your ... remarks ... yeah ... you get what you deserve. What have I said numerous times before: STFU and go play some chess. (Don't know why the significance of this escapes your notice -- especially if you like long games, you'd think you'd sit and think on things instead of responding off-the-cuff like me and my poorly played blitz games ... then again, you just never know what other people's deal is. With that, I bid you adieu until your next "I" attention grabber.)

"I" have fun screwing with people like you who just don't get it. And so, until our next game ... just remember, "I" am still going to get the better of you each time around.
