Americans got interested in chess because of Bobby Fischer at the height of the Cold War.

Then the world got interested in chess when Kasparov (Azerbaijan) challenge Karpov (Kasparov called Karpov "Homo Sovieticus", the Perfect Soviet Soldier) for the title, at the time when the republic were breaking away from the Soviet Union.

And again when Deep Blue beat Kasparov.
