Can't see followers on profile

So is following being removed altogether? It looks like these infrastructure strains are more a result of the concept of "following" than it is of kids doing f4f.

I don't think following is gone forever, you can see how many followers you have here: lichess.org/@/username/followers . But the fact that you can't see it on your profile, reduces the abuse of the "followers" feature.
Instead of followers, now, maybe Lichess should add friends feature.

Following itself is ofc not going to be removed. That clearly has value. But public follower counts have little benefit and as mentioned incentive undesired behavior which also puts more strain than necessary on the system. Ofc, the system already requires a good amount of resources for normal legitimate operations but that's fine. It also provides some corresponding value for people in return after all. What we don't need is people going bananas with and for their follower counts. And unfortunately in cases like this, even relatively few people can have quite a significant impact.

The system/UI will certainly also be adjusted a bit more but this is the most that can be done without a server restart and also is a nice easily reversible step to see how things go (not that it's likely to be reversed to be clear; that would require some killer arguments why public follower counts are a good idea).
thats so whack. lichess is how I keep in touch with friends across the country - now its one step more difficult to just look at their progress, who's online, etc. I mean, I guess I was treating it like a friends list but what...I shouldn't have friends in chess?

Whack move, absolutely some chessdotcom bogus.

Why not just supply an option to click through and see followers still but not display the number then, if people trying to get their number up is the issue?
the public follower count was the 2nd most important feature for me on lichess after the chess itself. what a shambles. Followers made me feel more special and connected within the community. Not to mention I was using it to quickly find a friends profile but now I have to type their username when they're not online. It feels like the site developers are doing updates without informing users or even asking for their opinions first. I guess it's time to start building my own chess server.
