How do I get better

The mother of all chess books:

Move First Think Later

(Don’t be be irritated by the title)

I agree with you, it's like learning hard just before an exam !
but i think that it is one of the way to improve. Hoping to improve only with these method is not useful.
If you look at de la Maza and Tikkannen elo, there is no miraculous progression (and we can observe a deling effect after that)
but what else to improve tactical patterns recognition ?

I prefer to spend time on the thinking process

Is somebody able to summarize MFTL in an other post ? (so much books to read !)

And at least : improving is not the same process if you are 12 or 45 years old !

MFTL has say 15 topics, no way to summarize except for: our brain works different than the authors claim. There are hardly any rules at all.
The gist is: We find moves by experience (trial-and-error), not by checking off bucket lists of written rules.

Thus, if looking at a position, our brains will start recognizing patterns and moves ("move first") BEFORE coming up with the abstract rules that may justify them ("think later").

Apparently, this is how the best of the best explain it (and just look at Carlsen for example playing bullet, the guy certainly does not construct trees in that time).

Of course, "move first think later" is meant to be exaggerated.
Asks advice. Tells people giving advice to shut up. A+ for common sense. You can ignore what we've said and get crushed forever for all we care.
Isn't he just obviously trolling anyways?

But we can still answer other people's questions.
