Meaning of 'chess'

very nice example @Long_Quach . yes people try to rewrite history to fit their pride. Karate is a damn good example. indeed originated in China and not Japan :)
Chess is from India. It is named after a game chess called "Chathuranga"

British ( English People) Named it as "chess"
Bishops were originally elephants, but as war elephants were no longer employed in medieval times and as bishops used to assist their monarch on the battlefield, western chess renamed the chess piece to bishop.
In some languages it still goes back to elephant

I think "jester" is a calque from the French "fou", English "fool".

"I pity the fou." - Mr. T.

He's a cold-hearted snake
Look into his eyes
He's been telling lies
He's a lover boy at play
He don't play by rules
Girl don't play the fool

- Paula Abdul

tu me rends fou: you drive me crazy. Literal: you render me a fool
