Scholars Mate

Why do so many players do Scholars mate?
It doesn't work out for them.

I run into this all the time. I wonder if they're bots?
Probably because Scholar's Mate works about 90% of the time against people around or below 1000.

Lol my capcha was scholar's mate btw.
I don't know how old your opponents are but I teach chess in schools and I see that often.
The problem is, I have to teach them the scholar's mate quite soon because they play in a scholastic tournament, so if they don't know how to avoid getting scholar's mated, they lose all their games pretty quickly.
However, even though I insist mostly on the defence, they don't care about that. What they really see is that suddenly, I taught them a way to win. Before that, they just play random moves, the game last forever and eventually one side has all the pieces and it ends in a stalemate. But now they have sort of a plan. They can win and win fast. And the thing is, it works.
It's not easy to explain to them that it is not very good, not only because it works, they win a lot of games, but also because it is not such a bad opening. I mean it's not good, but it is still much better than 1. h4 and 2. Rh3 which is how every kid plays naturally for some reason. They often lose the queen like in the game above because they don't really understand the details, but at that level playing a queen down is meaningless.
I guess your opponents may be beginning children.
We all started this way. And the first time it worked , we believed that we had conquered the secrets of the game!
scholars mate.. just think of it as the "rite of passage" for chess beginners
