How to popularise Lichess?

I think that Lichess deserves to have more players. Most people who discover Lichess don't return to other websites (e.g. chess.com). So why isn't Lichess the most popular chess website?

I think it's because Lichess is not as well-known as chess.com.

Remembering Lichess' open-source philosophy, what do you think Lichess could do to become better known?
Loyal members need to keep reminding other players on other servers how great it is here.

For example, my home page has several links back to lichess and I am starting to build a record of the tournaments which I play in and am successful

I also tried to post on GameKnot, but they got cranky about it. I do not advise nor support the site any longer. They are way too expensive for the service they offer.

When my subscription runs out, I will add the money I was paying there to here.

One thing for sure, this place does not run on good looks, users should be donating money to help support the site. Somebody has to keep the lights on.
This is an excellent site. I believe the sheer quality of Lichess is its best ambassador, and players of all levels (from beginners, all the way up to the World Champion himself) and walks of life have praised its features and keep gracing this platform with their very presence.

Spreading the word is of course very important but, please, do not underestimate the value of contributing financially to the project. Every little contribution matters and helps the developers maintain and improve this gem. Plus, you get a wonderful "Patron" icon, which should in itself be something to be proud of.

Chess.com was launched 2007, lichess 2010. Therefore hardly surprising...the better comparison is the speed in the increase of users online during the last years and in this respect, the story of lichess is pretty amazing
Chess.com earns a lot of money from their site and a good amount of that goes back into marketing and otherwise working to popularize and attract players to chess. And some of these players eventually move over to lichess, and some fraction of them even end up also supporting the site helping both sites grow while also simultaneously growing chess enthusiasm as well.

In the end I think both sites being very healthy is good for everybody. Which is larger is not so important as long as there's a critical mass at all levels, which there is!
Ads actually sound like an easy, potentially free way to contribute -- advertisement platforms might have free credits for first-time users.

100 users spending a $25 free credit would go a long way.
