Getting beat on theory

Getting stuck in slightly bad positions early against players 2200 and up just based on theory. I really don't have any interest in memorizing theory and that is what it will take to improve to the next level. So I guess I am just stuck here forever around 1750-1800. And that is ok. Maybe someday i can claim to be the best chess player in the world who knows no theory. :P

I know there are a lot of players in the exact same situation as me. There is no shame in it. Even Bobby F said it is a dead game because of theory, and it is. However quick games can be enjoyable still. Making a nice intuitive combination is why I still play.

Top players in the world just have great memories, maybe even close to photographic. And they memorize all opening and end game theory. This is why you see them take a lot of time in the middle game. Word of advice to Magnus challengers: be ultra aggressive in the middle game. I think Magnus would have a difficult time against a player like Tal in his prime.

Anyway, theory killed chess and I have no intention of wasting thousands of hours memorizing it. That sounds like the ninth circle of hell. Streaming blitz games are the only the holding up the game of chess. It certainly is not 12 draws in a row at the world championship.

Well you are only 1700 rated. You shouldn't be able to win against 2300. You have to start by beating 1800 casually and then go to 2000 etc. In the opening, you don't need to learn much theory, if you play systems, not openings. If you play Najdorf, you can't be surprised if someone who knows theory will beat you. If you play normal moves and go by opening rules (don't move piece two times, control centre, castle as soon as possible etc.) and study some games by master on opening you play, you can't be lost from opening.

"Getting stuck in slightly bad positions early against players 2200 and up just based on theory. " You will rarely if ever lose a game because of the opening. Play the white side of 1 e4 f5 or 1 d4 g5 against Stockfish and see how Stockfish destroys you with its bad opening.

Memorizing theory is the path of no improvement to the next level. 'Opening theory is ballast' - Nimzovich

'A player should study opening theory after he becomes a grandmaster. From then on that uses up most of his time' - Kasparov. You can get to grandmaster without opening theory. It is even the other way around: once you start with opening theory, you stop your own progress.

Capablanca even was World Champion without knowing theory: he found everything over the board. Nowadays World Champion is no longer possible without theory, but I know several IM who know no theory.
Honestly, you really don't need much theory below 2100 on here. Just basics, tactics, and tempo.
Chess960 is a dumb game too, white has huge advantage. Will not be playing that
