Why is chess a game of skill?

As you become a better player you learn to recognize all sorts of patterns and ideas, which effectively reduces the number of moves you would even consider.

So what may seem like an ocean of possibilities to a beginner often looks like almost zugzwang to an advanced player.
I'm shocked that this question even needs an answer. That's like asking why snooker and pool are games of skill for instance. I mean, isn't it just obvious?
A family member asked me how I decide to make 1 of “dozens” of moves in each position and I said “you may see dozens of move possibilities but I only see a few and calculate those to determine which I think is best.”

What does skill mean? You have it everwhere and it means different processes. So you find different skills and if you want to progress in your selected area you have to look which kind of skill has to be trained and how.

So there is nothing shocking in this question any more, I hope. ;)
@irishman964 Snooker + pool = hit the ball towards the hole. Chess = choose between without the clear picture. A person not know each line possifle and then to do anyway make THE CHOICE
