Atomic rules

Why do explosions in atomic do not affect pawns?
Well, I can give you three alternative answers:
1) For historical reasons. Someone invented the game as is and it was implemented on one chess server. Then the rules were copypasted by other servers.
2) I think white's advantage would be even larger than it is now, as white's initiative could blast even more material in the opening. Probably a winning advantage that a human can grasp.
3) Pawns are the soul of chess and what really makes the positions interesting. Pawns being less vulnerable to explosions makes them stronger and lets them survive for larger part of the game, therefore improving gameplay.
