What strange things did great players to get where they're at?

To improve at chess there are the usual advises: Tactics, games vs experienced players, books, take a time-machine and learn chess at 10, ...

What I want to know is : Did world-class players only followed them to get where they're at?

Are there unusual paths, forbidden techniques hidden to the mass?
I know of physical fitness, at the top they have to be somewhat active to stay sharp.
No no, its all suspect in Online Chess, these Online Chess sites are not honest, they are in control so they get to match random players, but they can pair players with fake opponents, nobody would admit it here though, so it remains a stupid theory, that i made up...
I learned chess yesterday, thats why im losing 30 games a day.....
I've heard some of the old Soviet GMs would swim in cold lakes and then play chess, part of physical and mental endurance training! Very important to stay physically fit, unless you want to have another Karpov incident.
It's just like in school. Get a great teacher, like a Ben Finegold, and you'll soar. Get a Hikaru Nakamura and you'll quit.
