How to get a feeling for OTB games again

Hey dear Chess-Fans!

I wanted to ask you guys if you could recommend some ideas on how to come back into tournament play! I haven't played any OTB-Game anymore since Covid started (only online-chess + only blitz), but the next season starts in a few weeks.

Do you maybe have some suggestions to help me get back into a routine/flow for playing long games instead of playing fast in one of those games? Have some of you maybe already played tournament games again and can share your experiences on what you could have done better before it started?

Thanks for your advice and greetings,
Urquharts
Try playing classical in this website. It will help you get out of the 'immediate move' from blitz and train your mind to calculate positions again.

Some longer puzzles may help you at that as well.
For getting back into the OTB rhythm I identified two challenges for myself:
1) Having tactical awareness and doing calculations while looking at a real chessboard instead of a computer screen.
2) Getting accustomed again to the longer time format of a classical game with ~3 minutes/move on average.

To get back used to OTB I play one long classical game per week against engines and my chess computers on the tournament board which I have at home.

same!
If you have a chess board at your home then play chess with your Brother,Sister,Mother or Father and it will make you feel that you are playing OTB ;)
I played a couple of tournaments this year so far. I didnt really prep for it (last one was early 2020) and I didnt have to many problems. Biggest one was not focusing enough after a few hours in the first few games.
I played in the 30+30 league online thou so I had at least some longer games.

My advice from what I saw:
- Remember to stay focused.
- Take your time in critical moments.
- Many players (especially young ones) will play something else comparing to their previous OTB games, so have your rep up to date.
Get some chess friends together for a practice tournament. OTB with boards, clocks, score sheets etc.
Try getting a puzzle position over your home board and practice with that...... Surely it will help you to get a bit addicted to the board as well as some practice......!
