1.e4 or 1.d4?

The best move is h4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@A_0123456 For me only 3 moves make sense c4, d4, e4, plus the flexible Nf3. Other moves besides this 3+1 are not worth of my study time. Of course, if someone much stronger plays with me, he can make 1.a3... 2.b3... 3.c3... 4.d3 until h3 and yet wins the game. That fact does not make an opening good. A good opening must end in middlegame with at least even game or, if possible advantage. It is important against equivalent or worst players. I am not arrogant to think i can win an opening with a much stronger player than myself, unless he doesn't take me serious and play around... And with a much stronger player i try to go by the book as much as i can, because i know that is a good line. If i'd get creative... Well, he is stronger by some reason... more theory, deeper calculus, more experience... in that case i try to get a drawish position and, maybe, some blunder may pop up.
@fonsecasf When I play 1. e3, I intend to follow it up with b3 and Nf3. If black responds 1... e5, however, I just pay 2. d4 and transpose to the French Exchange after 2... exd4 3. exd4.
@A_0123456 that's risky, the other may not follow that; you are white, why lose the oportunity of grab space and initiative? you are giving black the oportunity to play as they were white since move 1... If you feel confortably with close positions, play a system like london or stonewall.
@A_0123456 Take a look at this comments from a random site i google.

The question is from move 1 you made a move that is inferior to others, with not much to gain. Of course, if you play weaker players everything works, but, my opinion, try to be more ambicious, and grab center somehow. Define the game. Go for one of the 3+1 best moves. I love the french, but it leads to draws a lot. The exchange mainly. If you are black that may be good between close players. As white, a draw is kind of a defeat, because you had the only advantage a player may have at the start of the game: 1 tempo - and you lost it in move 1.
@fonsecasf I am not willing to study 500 books of theory to learn mainline 1. c4 1. d4 or 1. e4 openings fully
@A_0123456 That's the reason because i play d4. If you play e4 you have spanish, italian, scandinavian, russian, scilian, you name it. With d4, as white, the variants and ideas are much more similar and you don't have to know so much theory. the reply are usually 2 (d5/nf6). sometimes transpose. Almost eveyone play slav/semi-slav, KID, QGA or QGR. But because the games are slower and closed, the theory is more strategic and less tricky/tactic. But play white as black as you do is not the best way, i think.

Saying this, chess is the mirror of the mind, and everyone has some personal aproach to it, what it isn't bad and make the game so interesting. g4 is a move listed as one of worst, i played a couple of times, win all of them (if i remember well) and it is crazy and funny. If you want to test d4 with an unrated correspondence game to know better the plans, send me a private message.
We can exchange some opinions ingame.
