It was actually a N sacrifice (followed by queen swap) which you made with Rd6 , which is still a good move.

To see a real Q sac, look at this magnificent puzzle, which happens to be my all-time favourite. Since I already told you the answer, it shouldn't be hard to solve. But would you have seen it in a game? If not, play it 10 times every morning before breakfast for a year!
