Hi everyone! As we know, the best move in the opening is move by central pawn, of course. But 1.a3!? is not so weak as it may seem. Does anybody use this non-standart opening? What do you think about this move?

a3 is a great move, one could say as great as e4 or d4.
I consider it the masochist's choice.

Carlsen has played it several times.
Present conjecture is that chess is a draw with best plays from both sides. Hence black is OK, and it is OK to play 1 a3 like saying "I will have black". Objectively 1 a3 then is no worse than 1 e4 or 1 d4.
Also black can get away with playing ...a6 in moves 1 to 5 in several openings. Thus white can surely afford to play 1 a3.
