I often find the game board empty (completely, just the board squares on screen, no pieces) when game starts
but I have NOT set blind game on game options.
I don't find the problem everytime so I wonder if it's a matter of plug in, java, flash components or similar...
it' too much embarrassing, I can't play blind mode, I'm 1300-1400 rated at best!!

I believe thats a Shockwave Flash or Javascript error (or both)
I have that happen on my laptop; sometimes itll be totally blank; sometimes ALL the pieces (white and black) will be stacked on top of each other on A8.
Might try uninstalling/reinstalling flash and/or java.
Never hurts to flush your dns cache too (cmd prompt ipconfig /flushdns)
Lichess doesn't use Java, Flash, Silverlight or any other browser plugins.
What browser and version are you using?
lichess runs best with oracle java technology, flash, silverlight, all the googles and the bonzi buddy toolbar
I've had this happen and all you have to do is refresh... click on 'leave this page' (you aren't really leaving, it'll bring up the game) and the pieces should appear. You can do this during the game as well if you think the game gets 'frozen'.
I can really 'leave this page' without abandoning the game?
I use Microsoft Edge, the new "internet" browser of Windows
