New forum game embedding feature: Pros and Cons

There's no need. The next quote is from my previous message #18

> Keyboard nav will probably take a bit longer - it may be dependent on issue #2 in the pgn-viewer repository.

I was talking about github.com/lichess-org/pgn-viewer/issues/2. When that is resolved one way or another, we can look at the best way to process keyboard/navigation events in the embedded viewer.
@dboing
Not some but significant users use keyboard (I am not one though!)
Also, I got to know that users can't even post a particular position of game in threads. Is it true?
Well, you have got many negative points. A true feature is one with no negative points. And it's clear that previous one was better.

well if i did not lose count of all the issues being adressed, an earlier post mentioned it was made an issue.

and this is like news, only see what has friction, or is bad news... that is a zooming effect on perspective about the whole thing. I don't know much about other places online, but i find that there is a lot of transparency going on here, and that dev or mod being close by should reassure us that the changes are not just to annoy us ( kidding... can't help it, what is wrong with me?). I meant that i would cherish how fast new features are being adjusted upon user feedback.

I think we should accept being some beta testers.. At least it means things are being explored toward better. Maybe I am not always part of the user population that benefits from a change, and there are changes that I do benefit from. I am still getting lost in the forum, from not having that neutral peek into recent post agglomerated independent of forum sub-section. so i pick the random thing that keep popping up in the little room left. but do i complain? well it was nice to write, but yes, i do complain as often as I am reminded of it... blrriabgslksjjagopuh. going to sleep.
I posted in another more partisan thread a couple of times on this topic.

here:

lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/useless-new-feature-pls-drop-it?page=4#33

, making the point that it is possible to post a specific position from a study in the forum.
and

here:
lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/useless-new-feature-pls-drop-it?page=4#40

, realizing that its not possible to post a specific position in a game in the forum (lichess currently ignores the ply at the end of the address and shows ply 0).

My opinion:

I think it should be possible to post a specific position in a game in the forum, or to link to that position in a post on the internet.
Requiring that a study be created just so one can post a specific position in a game has several disadvantages:

1) its a lot of extra steps, meaning it creates a barrier to free-flowing discussion
2) it separates the post from the reference to the actual game. To get to the game one has to again search for the link address at the bottom of the study page. This isn't even live, so one has to copy-paste the address into the browser.
3) It creates unnecessary studies.

cheers

Backstepping is rarely intentional. But there is a bit of dogfooding going on here - the Lichess PGN Viewer is brand new and forums & blogs are first to use it. Sometimes you need a fundamental architectural change to support future goals. This often comes with some regressions.

With a dedicated QA staff, maybe these issues would be ironed out before release. But in this reality where lichess is free software as well as a free service, sometimes users have to do it. You should really just accept this.
Sorry about that. dboing suggested I reproduce my input here to pool the feedback on this topic in one thread. Glad lila has picked it up!

yes thank you.... for accepting my influence... I can still be lichess, right? :)
sure! I did not mean to pass on responsibility. I thought it made sense. I should have read the bug tracking at lila.
