I never block a player, unless they make me wait for a REALLY long time for no good reason or are rude or pull some major crap, so why do we have to be 'punished' by having to tediously click through GUI layers in blitz chess just to to get to the button to block a player (on web and phone apps)?
I only block clearly abusive, or inexcusably negligent players who it seemed pretty obvious 'ran away on the clock' and deliberately left me waiting for a minute and a half because they knew they lost the game. I realize sometimes it's just an accident, but I will block those people anyway. Otherwise, I don't make a habit of blocking people, because I know that thwarts the matching algorithm.
Making me work harder to block a player is NOT a deterrent from blocking players that I've decided to, it just makes life harder on me (and other victims), by not making it as easy to block a player as to friend them.
I hope the extra hassle is designed-in mostly to prevent accidental blockings. I really hope it's not to discourage hastiness in a politely patronizing but mildly authoritarian way of discouraging blocking, because, since I don't gratuitously block anyway, being impeded only creates a stress, inconvenience, wastes time, and most importantly, doesn't change the outcome.
If you're worried about accidental clicks of the blocking feature, why don't you just have a confirm dialog or have an 'advanced' preference that lets people who play thousands of games and know the terrain back-and-forth have the option for quick block or abort? You already know when people abuse the rules and ethos.
If the block feature was set up as a toggle icon on the first info pane about a user, so blocking *and* unblocking were straightforward and easy, I think it would just make life better for everyone.
