The Jews and the Palestinians (then called Philistines) shared the land since biblical times.
The state of Israel was founded after terrorist attacks.

That is like saying American's overemphasize the importance of Dec 7, 1941 in the USA's involvement in WWII or Sept 11, 2001 for the US invasion of Afghanistan.
Before Oct 7 Gaza was a semi-autonomous region being administrated by the elected government of Hamas. On Oct 7 that government launched a surprise attack on Israel, not unlike how the Japanese government launched a surprise attack on the US in 1941.
