Didn't the Whig party come about as a party against the Democrats and then eventually evolved into the Republican party, or am I confused?

Whigs started out as Anti-Masons and JQA supporters (coincidentally known as Republicans). They became the Republican party when the spread of slavery was less restricted following the Kansas Nebraska Act.
