The time---Dawn on this day in 1944...The place--A beach somewhere in Normandy.

German sentry #1---"What are all those ships doing out there?"
German sentry #2---"No idea..but if it's anything we should be worried about I'm sure der fuhrer will let us know."
Some disagree here, viewing 'Saving Private Ryan' in the theater in '95 offered a portrayal of sacrifice, setting me on a path to appreciate the freedoms I live with. I tried to imagine being one of that number who stormed the beaches.
As with all military endeavours,it was,to put it kindly,a bloody shambles an instant after the first shot was fired..Except that the German defenders were the more inept, the whole deal might have gone down the gurgler.
And that,as they say, would have been that.

I have visited a few battlefield memorial sites. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is in the northern metropolitan area of Atlanta where I live. KM was a major battle of the American Civil War. KM was a key success of the Union forces leading to the capture of Atlanta. On days that I hike there alone I think about the conflict that happened there.

Kennesaw Mountain is also the highpoint of Metropolitan Atlanta at 1900 feet. I had trained at that park for several weeks in 2000 to prepare for a difficult hike in the Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia. Atlanta is fortunate to have a scenic place so close to the city.
