On turn 24 white moves b4, black has an a4 pawn and somehow does axb3... despite the fact that i don't have a pawn on b3 and my b4 pawn disappears. What gives? I've had this happen twice now where it ruined a sequence and threw me off.

Google "en passant"

Wow, honestly had no idea that was a thing. Well case closed and stupid me -_-

Welcome to lichess, @pandizzle.

Years ago in my very first school tournament I captured en passant and my opponent looked and me and said "what was that?"

Then later in the same game he moved his king back and forth three times and tried to claim a draw by repetition.

This kid learned how to draw every game of chess in three easy steps. Grandmasters hate him!!!
