I had an account previously, where there was a wee box in the bottom right hand corner, showing online friends. But on this account, it doesnt appear. I have asked around and cannot find a solution, if anyone can help, I would be so greatful!

It still is down there in the bottom right corner. You have to click on it to view users online (that you follow).

The site layout varies depending on the width of the window it’s in.
If the window is wide enough, there a thing on the bottom right that can be expanded.
For some reason they don’t show it if the window is a bit narrower, even though that element is very small and doesn’t take up horizontal space.
But follower=friend ? I have box in right low corner but it says 0 friends online. I tried to make but i can only follow. Is it the same ? I mean followers/followed is the same as friends/known people ?
Sometimes it shows up, and then other times it doesn't. I don't like the fact how it only pops up as people you follow(or your followers, I forgot), because most of the time, those people aren't my FRIEND, they're just people I follow(or am being followed by), so...
Sometimes I click on the box and it says "0 friends are online" and then I get sad.
Along with the size of the window causing it to disappear, if you zoom in/out it will also cause it to disappear from view. I often forget I have the window zoomed for reading until I realize I can't see the friends list anymore.
Thanks for all this feedback, but I have the tab full screen, and the small rectengle that you need to click on to see the list, is not there.
“Friends” are just people you follow. There is no other concept of “friend”.
If the list isn’t appearing for some reason you might want to just bookmark the page showing people you follow. Ones with green dots in the list are online.
E.g.
lichess.org/@/DontFlagMePlease/following@DontFlagMePlease You said you have it full screen, do you have it zoomed by chance? Even when full screened if I have it zoomed in then I can't see the friends list. Control+/- will zoom it in and out. Try zooming it and see if it shows up.
Also, is this on your phone or a laptop/computer? What browser? I get different behavior on Chrome and Firefox with the zoom feature.
