I did run CCleaner today, having turned off computer last night.
This cleared all cookies and site data, so far as I know. I started with a fresh instance of Firefox.
Upon playing a game, I checked the slider. It was at 16 MB. I moved it up to 256 MB and toggled back where I found "Error Loading Engine."
Played some more games. Just checked again. Slider still at 256MB, and still get "Error Loading Engine."

So, today, having re-started the computer, I reached the analysis board and went straight to the hamburger and slider and raised it from 16MB to 256MB, then refreshed the tab immediately, and the "engine" loaded!
Then I was examining this game, and this move (white to move following 47.... Kg5, move 48)
https://lichess.org/hvSW0Q7q/black#94
and the computer was thinking for the longest time. Like 30 seconds without showing any progress on the green "calculating" bar, just spinning. So I was convinced the computer had "hung."
I opened the console and copied the contents. While doing this, the computer finally showed progress and offered a move. But only after, as I said, the l o n g e s t think prior to showing any progress at all of the green bar. Here is the console while the computer was seemingly stuck thinking:

@palom
Those console messages you're seeing are common, can be ignored, and unfortunately don't shed any light on what's going on here. I see you're running a Core 2 Duo CPU from 2008. How much system RAM do you have?

Plenty.
The engine is loading properly today. Not sure why...

I didn't even remember to raise the slider up from 16 MB.... but it is running today.

Today, got the Error Loading Page, tried refeshing the page, no help, tried raising the slider to 256, no help, tried refreshing again, no....
Went to write you this note, then thought I should quote the game so I duplicated the Lichess tab (here, where I am writing you) and then used the original tab to go "back" to the game.
At which point, the ENGINE LOADED!
? why? ??
The game is here
https://lichess.org/CuKbRJjO/white#36
and, in case it helps in any way, is the Console (which looks like the same messages as always.. this is AFTER it loaded the engine.)

Hey, thanks for the RAM update. Don't worry I'm still stumped!
But I took a deeper look at the code just now. I had previously added that error string "Error loading engine" to mean a variety of things when initialization failed. But since then, someone repurposed it to be specific to external engine. Is it possible that there is an External Engine configured in your account settings and that is failing sometimes?
