Emote spamming, or “chain reactions”

I typically try to confine myself to a single reaction per comment, but have sometimes noticed people using more than one. I suppose 👍 & 😄 go together reasonably well, or either of these and 🧡; but should it really be possible for one person to use both 👍 & 👎 on the same comment? Logically, you should have to pick one, like on YouTube (or Amazon, back in the day). For that matter, using 👍 on one’s own comment is just bad form. 🙄

More troublingly, I have occasionally observed people spamming every available reaction on every comment in a given thread. Usually this only continues for a page or two, because the spammer is too lazy to check back the next day and keep it going. (On that note: perhaps a “reaction timeout” for users who click a lot of these in quick succession would be a good preventive measure.) But as this adds “visual noise” to those threads, it seems like a form of vandalism, almost like graffiti. So while I accept that it’s sometimes desirable to use two reactions, I have to question why one person is allowed to use *every* reaction at once. Surely it would be reasonable to impose some limit?

Apart from the timeout idea, I have no real suggestions. I would simply like to know if this behavior is in fact intentional / desirable. For my part, I doubt I would ever use more than two at a time, and that rarely. But I think it’s worth considering ways to minimize spam in any form; and whereas one or two reactions may be quite reasonable, using them all together strikes me as spamming. Personally, I find it distracting, and believe it detracts from whatever discussion is being had. But that’s just me, and I’m open to other perspectives.

Cheers
Let people display their childishness if they really want to. Sure it's somewhat distracting, but also ignore-able.
Mʳ Pushwood: 😉

Mʳ Scribbles: Never said I did. (Looks like the joke’s on you. 😛) In all seriousness, see the last paragraph of the OP, where your question was answered before it was asked.

TCF: Touché.

So how about adding more emotes? The current selection is fairly comprehensive, so I suppose most possible additions would simply be redundant. E.g. 👏 is unneeded in lieu of 👍, and 💋 because of 🧡. However, we don’t currently have anything like one of these: 😉 😢 🤷 And if we did, I for one would use them all the time. …

Actually, I thought of a better reason than any I gave above. While this is obviously a thumb up:

👍 1

This is less obviously a thumb up:

👍 2 👎 1 😄 1 🤔 1 🧡 1 🦄 1

(Even though it’s technically two thumbs up.) So it’s not so much pollution, as dilution that’s the (potential) problem with such spamming. In a nutshell, that’s the only thing I might object to (hypothetically, in some instances, where it could be construed as rude).

In other words, it’s an issue of information vs. noise. I have at least a slight preference for information, or I’d never bother reading anything. 😅 And I suppose I resent the extra second required to parse information that’s been diluted thus.
#6 Changing the Horsey emoji/reaction for a unicorn will create riots on all forums.
I don't think that would be wise 😂

I don't like the emoji/reaction system at all. It makes threads too colourful, and I have seen people use it in a negative way, such as spamming.
But if we could disable them from our view, for example by one click in our profile settings.
Then I wouldn't care what others do with their emoji/reactions.
(But perhaps that requires at lot of coding?)

If not, perhaps limit the amount of emoji/reactions people can cast per day to, I don't know, 3 or 5?
This will make people think more about what posts, they thinks deserves a like/dislike etc.

Also, the fact that people can like their own post, just seems weird to me. I can't see any purpose for that.
(Other that it would require additional coding to prevent it, which I admit is a valid reason)

Adding more emoji/reactions would just create additional confusion to the mix... for example, the Horsey... What does it even mean?
And some people wanna add more? Mermaids, unicorns, and 7 different kinds of smily faces?

I play on a phone, and I don't like or use the reaction system, it's in the way, sometimes I unintentionally cast a emoji/reaction when scrolling up and down a page. If I notice it, then I will correct it, but of I don't...

Imagine this:
#1 my mom just got run over by a truck.
Someone unintentionally cast a 👍
Then everyone else thinks that person is a horrible human being for liking that comment.
And soon insults starts flying, over nothing but a misunderstanding.
(My mom is fine, this was just an extreme example)

I have seen on multiple occasions, topics being highjacked when someone ask another person, why they dislike their comments.
