But why do I need a "better" browser?

All these complains about getting a newer browser is total nonsense. Getting a modern browser is something you should do in any case, for your safety online. And I assure you, it will cost you a bit less than a Lamborgini. Promised.
Lichess is open source, so there's no problem someone - perhaps one of these devs who just know that it's easy supporting both versions, or that the lead dev has made a bad decision and should be somehow supporting the old browsers unless a given feature doesn't work at which point it degrades gracefully and in a way which would not involved a lot of hot air on the forums - forking it and backporting new features into it from the mainline.

I'd be surprised if there were many people who only have a device which is incapable of supporting so-called "modern browsers" (perhaps more accurately described as "insecure browsers"). There will be a lot more people who have no devices unable of installing only insecure browsers.

But I guess if one can't bring themselves to install a new browser, or drop a small amount of cash on a device capable of running one, it's a bit much to expect the dev to bend over backwards to support you. Farewell, old friend!

Does that all mean Lichess V2 ist not compatible with Netscape Navigator??
hey, did you know you are legally allowed to have more than one browser?

download a modern browser.

set the homepage for that browser to lichess and log in.

make a shortcut for that browser, put it wherever you want.

??????

profit.

and you can still use your favorite ancient browser too.
Don't confuse them with logic. They want people who make websites for free to support browsers which the browser developers themselves no longer support. There's no reasoning with them.
I love Lichess , I will never sign out , but...
The logic of "outdated browsers" , "outdated operating systems" , "old computers that must be thrown to dust" is too risky for any website.
How many people use software and hardware that Lichess considers suitable only for garbage?
And what if these people cannot update for one reason or other?
Needless to say , people with no money are affected more by the "dust and rubbish" theory...
People with no - or little - money, such as those in developing countries, are much more likely to have a cheap yet modern phone which is more than capable of supporting modern browsers. It's old devices (5+ years) which might be stuck on an old browser. If you can't upgrade your browser and you can't afford a new device then you can't play Lichess. It's pretty simple, really. If Lichess means that much to you, upgrade (some people can and just don't want to, amusingly) or buy a device capable of supporting it. I'd be surprised if there are many people who have an internet connection and a computer and free time to play chess but who can't find, say, £50 for a phone or £80 for a tablet capable of running a modern web browser - less if you're happy with a second hand one. The bar is so low here the moaning is just pathetic. If you're running an unsupported, insecure OS/browser you've got bigger problems than an inability to use one specific website.

I'll say it again:
Linux is free, you can try it out on a bootable USB stick.
@Doofenshmirtz ,
You have a good point and I respect your opinion.
Let me remind you , though , the case of chess.com update. Erik decides to delete v2 and replace it with v3. At first , he is so enthusiastic he doesnt listen to any complaints. But suddenly he realizes that "backward compatibility" is much more important than he believed...
So , what did he do?
The site continued with both versions!
He even apologized to users with older systems who couldnt run v3 , and advised them to continue with the old version!
