I see the symmetry and elegance of the clock placements but it really isn’t practical to put one of the clocks under where a person’s thumbs have to hover while they’re playing. It is really a bad design practically speaking, even though it looks good and seems sensible until you actually start to use it.
My thumbs obscure the clock often when playing fast and I can clearly see the other player’s clock and and I lose track of my time as a result, whereas if both clocks were in the same screen region it would be much easier and more practical and true to speed chess, where one really does see both clocks at a glance and can compare both clocks without extra time and distraction and eye movements. To differentiate whose clock is whose you could make the digits match the piece color of the respective players or any other kind of indication.
