Atomic chess bug?

Lost but don't see why previous move for white wasn't mate?
It was mate. But in Atomic, mate doesn't always win. Did you read the rules?

Quoting from lichess.org/variant/atomic:
"Traditional checkmate applies to atomic as well, but any move that results in blowing up the opposite king will result in an immediate victory, overriding all checks and checkmates."
Its not just checkmate in classic its also checkmate in Atomic too - won games with mate this way before.
Good for you.

I agree; the rules are a little unclear. You know how little kids often learn simplified rules for chess? A common one is that the goal of the game is to capture (or kill!) the king. Later on, someone explains checkmate. What's the difference? Nothing really, except when you checkmate, you're just demonstrating you can solve a kill-in-1 puzzle. So the game can end a little early. Today, you might declare "I have mate in one", and your opponent agrees & resigns. Same thing; just formalized into the rules.

In Atomic, the race to kill the king isn't definitely won when someone achieves checkmate, because the other side could still kill the king first. That's what happened in your game.
The special move that sets apart atomic chess from normal chess is exploding pieces.

Its confusing I know but you will soon get the hang of it.
It can be used to win the game too, under time pressure

I never played atomic myself and never read the rules, but I think chess ins like real life only one step at a time. Your queen check-mated the black king, however the black queen took your king down before you could take the her king down, thus black win. Does that make any sense?

I know it is confusing, But even if you Check/Mated your opponents king, If they can blow your King up They win
In a few days you'll get the hang of it, this problem came to me too when I was starting to play atomic
