Why does Lichess consider a game with 10 + 0 Rapid when FIDE and USCF consider this format blitz, or am I mistaken about the rules?
Just a hunch...but I'm wondering if chess.com is saying the same thing about 10 + 0.
@TheOriginalWildBill because online and otb are different
If Starting Time + 40 × Increment < 25 minutes than it is rapid for Lichess. The following link explains this and also goes into detail about why 25 minutes was chosen. lichess.org/blog/Wh9KWiQAAI5JrKVn/introducing-rapid-ratings
Chess.com has also recently changed their 10+0 from blitz to rapid.
in what way are they different?
@mjmawn33
I just don't understand why Lichess, (and apparently Chess.com) don't just follow the established guidelines to make online play comparable to OTB. To me this makes more sense especially since more and more world-class tournaments are being played online and the volume of online play has greatly increased as well, thanks for your answer.

Technically, even if it was 10 minutes and one second total time with no increment, it wouldn't be blitz by FIDE rules. And I personally agree that 10 minute games are a whole different animal from the 3+0, 3+2, and 5+3 games that are rapidly becoming the norm for blitz. I think that chess.com and lichess.org are ahead of the curve in this particular case, and that over time FIDE and USCF rules will change to recognize that.
