Why do I perform better in tournaments than in quickplay?

Title. I play against 1700s and 1600s in tournaments, but when I play against my skill level, 1500s, I go on a losing streak. I somehow perform worse with my own skill level, irrespective of the time, when compared to tournaments.
same here. It may be the competitiveness that you have. Anyway, playing higher players is better practice, so keep doing it!
what kind of tournaments are you talking about? i have lost against a boatload of 1300 players, which was my rating, and had a better record against higher rated guys. but that discrepancy was probably in short time controls, which is not what you're talking about. sounds like you need to beat those 1500 players. compare their opening repertoire against those 1600's, style of play, etc. anyway, look at the bright side: you're beating stronger players, that's good. you just need to figure out what's happening with the 1500's.

your title says you do better in tournaments than quick play. then your text says time control is not a factor. which is it? if you're better in tournaments, most would take that, i assume. tournaments are serious players. quick play is guys who play a lot of quick chess ----------- they use different strategies than tournament players, and in my experience, quick play guys may never have played in a tournament.
Honestly, I (a 1400 Classical player) get beaten by lower ranked players when they play moves so out of left field, it disorients me. Logically i know I need to sit back and reevaluate the position and find the right move, but I find I make a reflexive move, and it ends up being a mistake.
