It‘s nothing official, rather a lichess quirk. Never got in touch with extra seconds so I have no problems which such casual-hobby-player fuss. I play my game.

@mdinnerspace That's factually incorrect that both players get more time, you'd have to use the extra time for your opponent to possibly benefit from the time they gave you which you aren't required to do and even then its residual time benefit and not primary as they'd have time only to think on your move not theirs from that extra time. This is making a mountain out of a minor issue here and I stand by my position that its just bizarre to me as to your whole stance and argumentation on the whole matter. I had a very interesting game with a stronger oponent and I was loosing on time in equal position. He was much stronger, but some how I was creating complex problems. At the the end I lost but the game was really enjoyable.

Of course, in the big picture, the +time issue is very minor indeed. It rarely is used as a tool of abuse. Very few get subjected to an opponent who adds time with ill intentions. But I wonder, would the opinions change if they were exposed to an opponent who added minutes to their time at the start of a game? Or the opponent has plenty of time, probably winning, and they continuously add massive amounts of time to the clock?

It is Bizarre.
No other chess site, no other OTB situation in chess, permits an opponent to add time to a clock WITHOUT the opponents permission.
There are benefits for sure, but BOTH players need agree.
The clock which controls the time is no different on-line or OTB. Your opponent simply should not be given the means to "pick up" the clock an alter the remaining time unless you are in agreement.
This seems rather "basic".

I start a chess game with the time agreed to. I have every right to expect to play with the chosen time control. Not the added minutes that an opponent can freely add to my clock that I do not want nor give my agreement of.

This is funny, I've been guilty of this, but not because I wanted the opponent to suffer, I merely wanted a win via checkmate vs time out, nothing more.

The add time button is great! Maybe take it out of rated games, but its great for giving friends time odds and letting them see how it will play out. If op doesn't want to play hopeless positions, they have a nice little resign button.

And as for if someone gave me lots of time at the begging of the game, id use it, especially if i think they did it to be rude, go make some food or hell play another game in a different window.

As far as FIDE rules, you cant pick up the clock during a game, you also cant take notes witch is clearly allowed here.

Every time i see some complaint over something extremely trivial like this, I think, this must be the only online game they play. On ps4 people will team kill you at the start of the round for picking the wrong character, or there is an actual website you can put someones username in and it spams them 50 messages from different accounts.

If you want to use more time , simply seek a longer game.

Exactly makes my point. This is how the feature can be and is often used. Players want to checkmate rather than win on time. Nothing more, nothing really offensive.
Personally, I try to never be checkmated in the 1st place. Will most often resign before the fatal move. (Not always the case, sometimes I'll permit a nice combo or sac to play itself out).
But the ENTIRE POINT is that the only person who can +time is the opponent, who does not require my permission. I do not want the time, do not want to be mated, if in time trouble my clock runs out, you win.
My time is mine alone... not yours to manipulate.

If a player does not want the time, for whatever reason, whether you think it is "bizarre" or silly is not the issue imo. To solve the issue, simply in settings make it possible to disable the feature, as is done in every other chess site.

if you lean back and enjoy your opponent trying hopelessly to avoid checkmate, and give him extra time for prolonging the torture, basically, for me, it is someone with sadist inclinations, although you might think it is exxagerated or bizarre, ok, agree, so let's say, subtle, subdued, mild... but definitely sadist inclinations... he wants to dominate and the feeling of being superior to last as much as possible... thank you for all the feedback!
