It's a little demoralizing.
I like to think that we are here because we love to play chess, win or lose. But it feels like I meet a rage quitter (or staller) almost every session. The frequency of this particular bad behavior has definitely gone up.
This also keeps me from playing time controls slower than bullet.
Just a vent. Not expecting solutions.

Giving these types of people attention is likely to make them happier. Report, block, and move on. There’s nothing better to do.
While you’re waiting for their clock to run out, you can put something on with another device. Try epic bands like Ledger and Miss Amani.

Yup, that's what I do. And I negatively stereotype their country. (Don't worry - by now, it's everyone!)

I will check those out - thanks!

@Shadow1414 Or toast some bread and have a snack. I recently had 4 minutes to wait, but I had fig preserves to enjoy.
@StanFurd I admit I also notice the country of origin and have drawn some conclusions which I hesitate to share -- in the interest of world peace and harmony.

I wonder sometimes if it isn't kids playing on routers with crappy wifi, or in a house that's got a lot of obstacles blocking the signal. Not to say there aren't plenty just closing the window and walking off, but I bet some are legit connection issues to their home wifi.

Well, in bullet you play lots of games and see many people... and letting the time run down in bullet is a bit easier to justify, especially if you don't have much time left. But yeah, it's kind of annoying - but then, I think they could just try to make stupid moves and flag me, so on the other hand I am usually not too upset. And then, sometimes there are really technical issues. Network problem is one problem, but I've also lost games because my mouse battery died, or the door bell rang and I didn't make it back in time (very rare, but happens).
When someone does it too extreme, like quitting dead-lost with still "lots" of time on the clock, simply wait and then report, if you feel better. I do this occasionally, maybe once a week or so.
I'd say to can experience it on longer time controls as well, but it is no major problem. And when thinking rapid or classical, a minute of wait when they disconnect to claim the win is not that much compared to the the length of the game.

I can attest that fig preserves help A LOT in case of rage quits and opponents refusing to resign.
I also highly recommend fresh Deglet Noor dates, a delicious snack (a bit sticky though) in case of nuisances, like an opponent refusing to resign AND adding you time, in a bid to force YOU to resign :)

It's the internet. The veil of anonymity allows people to justify all kinds of bad behavior. If the love of chess and a community is what you are looking for, try to find an OTB club and, if available, one that serves beer. Beer and chess are a great combination.
Peace and love,
Lungu

Correct you are Lunga. When we first got telephones, in my childhood, I noticed how I could talk trash to people, say things I would never say in person. The internet magnifies that effect. Let's hope some future change puts us back to face to face encounters.

How do you know they're in a rage? A lot of times I quit if I blunder my queen and I'm down -10 or something. I don't see the point of grinding a losing position just praying my opponent blows it, it's not fun. It's almost like people want you to suffer for an extended period after blundering. It's more fun to spend the mental energy on the next game. It should also be more fun for the winner to move on to the next game but I think they feel satisfaction from destroying the other side, but sorry, that satisfaction it's not going to come at my expense.
