Ruy Lopez (Beginner)

Hmm i'm surprised. I watched some scotch games and it seemed super tactical (which could just be learned) and i chose the Ruy Lopez because it seemed that at my lvl even without theory it could lead to interesting tactical and positionnal play. I'm actually very happy with this opening (not the berlin but well).

Btw what makes you think the Italian is more suited than the Ruy Lopez for a beginner ? These openings seemed as complicated/theory heavy to me.
@MrGM

of course the exchange is playable

but the statistics say it is not as good as b-r4

and at his rating he absolutely should be studying openings
with the goal of mastering one for white and one for black

@Proustino

the giuoco tends to be more tactical
the ruy is all positional play

beginners books push the giuoco because they are not really ready for play with positional nuances
@Paradise_Pete

its called game theory
and it works

you might find an undergraduate class in it if you can get into a uni

but for the good stuff you will need to go to graduate school
Why would the Ruy Lopez be more complicated than the Queen's Gambit for example ? If you have fun with the position it should be ok. I mean a lot of people here under 2000 play the Najdorf and have good games for example. I srsly don't understand, there is a load of theory on the french and i've heard many time it was a good "beginner" opening as black.
@Proustino

ruy is no harder than other openings
perhaps even easier than those with tactical fireworks and gambits
galore

the french is a very good opening for anyone

and how often do you get a ruy anyway
usually they play a sicilian , french, alekhine, philodor, petroff,
caro kann, or offbeat p-n3 (either side), or just plain p-q3 first.

After 1. e4 - e5.2.Nf3 - Nc6.3.Bb5 - a6. you can try to "blow away" you opponent, out of theory/opening preparation, with the move 4.Bxc6. This is a bit of doubtful idea, but it have been seen......
Another way, to try and "surprise" your opponent, is 4.d4 - and if, exd4 then 5.Bb5. This is not a "well known idear" and can serve as a nice surprise weapon.. How ever. Dont use to much time on openings if you are new at chess, as many says. Get to know the game, how to develop, get your king to safety and a understanding on middlegames strategi. I always recommend, new chess player, to read and learn from Artur Yusupovs Boot your chess. There is 9 books, and the series recognized and recommended, by many international chess club, and FIDE.......
Befor I end this, I like to give you a nice opening trap, that maybe can give you a few nice winnings.
1.e4 - e5.2.d4 - exd4.3.Nf3 - Nc6.4.Bc4 - Bc5.5.c3 - dxc3. and now: 6. Bxf7+ This will blow away many chess player. Please note that the idea, also can be played like a normaly two knight opening eg: 2.Nf3 - Nc6.3.d4 - exd4.4.Bc4 - Bc5.5.c3 - ... etc.
The idea is very simple. after Black takes the bishop on f7 ( 6 Bxf7 + - Kxf7 ) White can play 7.Qd5+ - Kf8 ( almost forced ) 8.Qxc5+ ( winning back the bishop, with a check :-) ) and after: 8. Qxc5+ - d6.9.Qxc 3 - ... White have caused some weaknesses, on the Black king side, and take away 0-0 from Black. The position is equal, bt Black may find it hard, to find a good plan, which can give you an "easy game". Please notes that Black is NOT forced to take the pawn on c3. Black can play 5.c3 - Nf6. Which may take the game in to eks max lange gambit, or the Italien Giuoco Piano, variation.
It is ofcourse a good thing to know different openings systems, but if you are new in chess, you shout get a good understanding on the basic ideas and strategy......
I wish you the best of luck :-)
