After move 55 only a bishop and rook remain... way more than 50 moves take place.. i then finally lose on time???

Not a bug. FIDE rule. See last sentence here:

Ah I see. 100 moves in reality. Right...
The 50 move rules means playing 50 moves after the last capture or pawn move. There was a capture on move 55. On move 96, black timed out. There is enough material on the board for white to mate.

The 50-move rule is about full moves, i.e. 50 white moves and 50 black moves. You had only 39 moves since last capture.
