wow. Going through the comments, I came across a reference to the famous comment that "Academic politics is the most vicious and bitter form of politics, because the stakes are so low." And I feel safe with the conclusion that the author of that quip felt they had finally found a political arena where the stakes were smaller and the infighting more vicious.
Academic politics is also the most vicious because the stakes-players are often the most pretentious.
