idea for a variant strategochess

Not sure, maybe black needs to keep his pawns on 7th rank and make sure it's all well defended. You could also add a rule that captures on move 1 are not allowed?!
my idea was to put some pawns on the 8th rank to defend pieces on the 7th rank. thats interesting that captures are not allowed on move 1.
if black is in check in the start position and white to move he lost if white is in check in the start position white can still protect the check
So you both set up a position for white OR black and then depending on the outcome of the dice you play a side?

That's slightly a weird way to dedicate colors. You can also (as you told earlier) send your own made position to a middleman and then one player will challenge the other player to a game on random color.

I'm not a great fan of the random side. I think as in Stratego you also don't have that. You setup your own position and play with that. I also saw a discussion on the pawn problem so I hope this list will bring up some clearness.

- Pieces move the same as in normal chess.
- Castling is not possible (Your king and rook don't have special move features).
- Pawns can be place on the 1st and 2nd rank.
- ONLY pawns on the 2nd rank can move 2 squares forward in 1
move. (So the pawns on the 1st rank first move to the 2nd rank
and then they can move 2 squares forward).
- A capture on move 1 is NOT allowed.
- The game is won/drew/lost the same as in normal chess.

In this way king safety is very important (The same as in Stratego) and is very weak.

EDIT: This is already possible with lichess and so no new code is needed to be written. So Thibault doesn't need extra work ;)
Capture not allowed on move 1: for white or also for black? If white plays 1 Qg6 is black not allowed to take it 1...hxg6?
Let's correct that by making the "no take rule" by saying that white and black can't take pieces on the 1st or 2nd row on the first move. If white for instance play Qg6 or something and black has a legal move to take the queen black can play that move.
