John Bartholomew's 'Chess Fundamentals' and 'Climbing The Rating Ladder' series have been very helpful to many.

May I recommend the YouTube Videos by NM Dan Heisman?

While he might not be the strongest player ever, he is an excellent trainer!

His videos will teach you a lot on proper though processes in chess, how to evaluate positions, find candidate moves, avoid common mistakes,... great stuff!

I stopped doing it but the biggest jump in my chess abilities came when I would play through and analyze a game by my favorite player (Fischer) once a day. It would take me a half hour to an hour, but I learned a ton just by looking at Fischer's games. I did it for a month and my rating went up by 200 during that month.

I would study some games by your favorite player and try to figure out some of the ideas at hand.
