Have lockdowns permanently altered tournament chess?

I am specifically talking about the option of playing remotely, which many would probably cling to now that they've tried it out. I suppose online-only tourneys will stick around. What about traditional over-the-board events? I don't think hybrid tourneys are logistically feasible so I'm wondering how OTB would pan out.

The sad thing is in a perfect world the need to travel somewhere to play chess would be laughable. You could remain in the comfort of your bedroom and do as you wished during the game. But of course cheating puts a spanner in the works (hacking also a concern).

And as engine use is inevitable, personally I would not feel at ease playing rated events from home. Not to mention the hassle of being tied down to Zoom.
Hybrid tournaments i.e. with a FIDE arbiter present to prevent cheating hold a big potential.
We could have a huge continental championship, where all players play from their local club without travel.
If FIDE finds a good way to prevent cheating, it would be logical to see the chess scene being moved to online in the near future. But that is easier said than done, I imagine there will be a plethora of cheaters if we were to play FIDE ELO rated chess online.
remote tournaments run with arrangements as defined by FIDE can be used nationally as well. In countries like Finland with sparse population and relatively large country makin remote attendants to tournaments would be good. But does create additional work for organizers as locations for remote players and arbiters need to be arranged.

So these multi-location tournaments might became a permanent thingy.
