Discovered 7 move checkmate

Black made a terrible blunder, not castling their king. At first, I did not see that the queen was blocking the e-file. So I decided to fork him attempting to get his queen then it was suddenly checkmate.

GG
Nice! By the way, Nxe4 is a mistake. You have to first kick the knight with d3, then capture. If you capture immediately, you could end up losing the queen.
It's a pity, you can't benefit from the nice family fork anymore, because he was mate. ;)
Nxe4 is not a mistake. If white plays Qe2, you can play Qe7. If white takes Qxe4, then you could play f6. Pinning the knight to the king.
@extremegamer f6 is a pretty bad move there, however d6 is alright. It's objectively not so good for black but in blitz you can definitely play it.

But yes, the more sound approach is of course to play 3...d6 and get a normal Russian defense.
@extremegamer @moistvonlipwig White will end up a pawn ahead after 3.Nxe5 Nxe4?! 4.Qe2 Qe7 5.Qxe4 d6 6.d4 dxe5 7.Qxe5 Qxe5 8.dxe5. Black probably has some compensation because the pawn on e5 might become weak, but I don't think it is enough.
@LDJ 7.Qxe5 is not so precise. White is still fine there but so is Black. If White wants to try for a serious advantage he should try 7.dxe5 which leads to a complex struggle however White can keep an extra pawn if he plays precisely.
