@bruce_wayne1 , I strongly agree with @tpr and @tornu . Rapid, and even better classical, in definitely the way to go if you are trying to improve.

I was 1600 rapid when i decided to only play blitz, bullet and ultrabullet. I hadn't played rapid in over a year, but when i returned i got to 2100 rather easily. I think i can attribute this to blitz.
@Lwazi_2004 , yes that's doable. I have had similar experiences on my other account, @chessmathnerd. I think slower games works better for most though.
I personally think rapid and classical are better. In order to improve you must be able to assess a slow position first.
Playing blitz only makes sense once you have already developed some sort of "instinct", that allows you to come up with *some* reasonable move in < half a second in most positions.
As long as you haven't reached that point yet: Only rapid or classical.

solving puzzles would be much more helpful than playing, but maybe less fun
rapid is NOT slow thinking........... it is fast. stick to rapid or blitz. if you want slow, that's classical or correspondence. someone suggested trying variants. those are for fun; if you want to get better at chess, dont' do variants. they won't help your regular chess at all.
