ARE CHESS PLAYERS ABOVE AVERAGE IN INTELLIGENCE?

My IQ is close to what they call "Genius level". But I am not even a master. IQ only measures intellectual intelligence, so there are many smart people who are terrible at chess, and have low IQ's for that matter. It is not true that high IQ means you will be good at chess. However, chess does increase your IQ, so likely, if you spend lots of time in chess, you will have a high IQ, but if not, that isn't a problem.

It is true though, that people who are intellectually gifted, (i.e, those with high IQ), tend to be drawn to strategy games like chess, so this gives the illusion that those with high IQ are better at chess.

@lovlas , FYI, MC has an IQ of 190.
That number is made up. MC has publicly said that he has no interest in IQ measurements.
Are you sure. If he said that, that was smart of him! Ok, I am wrong there then, but the rest of my post stands.
Thank you for the clarification.
IQ is not a measure of intelligence tbh. It's more of a measure of stupidity, and even more so than that, a measure of pretty much nothing. I wouldn't care about someone's IQ scores at all, even if you got 200, unless it is extremely low, below the second standard deviation or 3rd standard dev.
I mean, chess helps with pattern recognition, so having some chess knowledge might have some use. But that is from my uneducated standpoint. On a whole, I don't think there is any significant correlation between chess and intelligence.
No Reason why is it's assumed if you play chess you have hi I.Q Fact is Chess is a skill and Yes a Few have GM type pattern
recognition and sure a few are very high I.Q But talking about chess as a whole no. Speaking about GM's compared to the
general public yes. Hope that helps. Also there's 1,000 types of factors that can go into is someone super above average.
If you just research the subject you'll see a giant universe of studies, thoughts, ideology etc... Fact is we are just scratching
the surface of what super intellect is and it's going to evolve even more as the world focuses on it. Especially with A.I
and humanity as a whole compared with machine learning.
Yeah, I mean there are trillions of confounding variables out there that can't really be addressed.
I am sure you guys have an IQ of 150+ just like I have 192, from that very reliable website that has three questions, and only geniuses can solve all!

Anyhow, IQ has little correlation with chess skill, if any at all. Also, an IQ of 103 for example isn't the same everywhere, different countries use different scales.
Boasting about your IQs here will do little good. Magnus has never said anything about his own IQ numbers, he very likely has never even taken a test. Neither high nor low IQ will help you in any way in chess if you don't actually put in the hours and study chess.
Yes for example is an engineer super smart well one must also ask is being stupid a determent to being in the field. What if a guy grew up around a father that loved everything engineering? What if the kid had a massive passion for it and grew into
the field. The assumption is he's an engineer he has a super high I.Q when in fact he's spent the 10,000 hours needed to master
a given subject and may have normal I.Q but a ton of personal interest. I feel that gifted in I.Q doesn't cover imagination, how creative a person is. How determined they are. If someone spent a lifetime finding every quality of greatness I feel I.Q Would
be 10% of their findings. Cool thread - Also most GENIUS High I.Q Folks end up in mental wards. Why? Well life is 100 things
that are vital that occur each week, month, day etc... If your overly built in 1 area you may be critically weak in vital others.
So to have a 200 I.Q Sounds great until you compare it what a happy life takes or To what drives us as well adjusted purposeful
people. What a nightmare it would be to see this life in a way that nobody could relate. You'd be trapped in your own world
blocked from the happiness of the world Any who love the subject. Few have high I.Q in any given anything.
It is also worth mentioning that no test can give an accurate approximation of someone's IQ above a certain figure, usually around the 99 percentile (which tends to be around 130 on most scales).
So saying somebody has an IQ of 190 means absolutely nothing
NMs have an IQ of 130, IMs have an IQ of 150, and GM have an IQ of 170. super GMs have IQs of 190+

This is fact
