A modest proposal

What about losing one rating point for an aborted game, or one additional rating point for letting time run out without resigning?
For letting time run more than 1 mn... good idea!
The idea is good, but how do you know if it is not a difficult position and the player expects to solve in 1min? With 10 seconds you can win a game ...

I know, we humans know when the guy is being an idiot, but you can't make the punishment automatic.
I didn't mention a minute, just that time ran out.

The only problem with it I see is bullet games where players who are actually winning time out. But don't time out!

But yeah, I'm in favor of automatic. It's only one rating point, but it could still deter the trolls.
The problem is, losing rating points is not a punishment. You will simply get them back over time. I think the punishment should focus more on the fact, that it is bad behaviour, because you steal time from your opponent. I woould suggest to force them solving a number of tactic puzzles.
A modest proposal

Everybody having a won position and the opponent let's the time run should take it as a gift. As the opponent is either to weak to congratulate to the victorious player or inable to express himself in adequate language he gives the winner the possibility to enjoy the final position and remember the critical moments of the game, when the loser failed.

Take it with a smile or a laughter, fitting to your mood!

Then one's rating point would reflect one's personality not one's chess skills.
1. Adding or subtracting points for anything except the results of legitimate games, will negatively effect the scoring ecosystem. This would cause more problems than it would solve.

2. That said, a lot of people like to start games and then abort them when:

a) They're up against a provisional or relatively new account.
b) They get matched against someone rated higher than they are, and they abort instead of setting their match filter.

When Lichess overtakes cheatcom, and wait times are of absolutely no consideration, at that point, a fantastic dissuasion would be to pull peoples' ratings for an hour/day/week/month depending on their misbehaviour.

Right now, if Lichess suspended ratings, it would just send people to cheatcom.

Don't get me wrong, in a few different instances it would GREATLY benefit the Lichess community to be permanently rid of the right people...that said...I don't get the impression that a few time-crimes or early-aborts would necessarily constitute that line.

3. I agree that nobody should be penalized for ending the game on a long think. I play classical time controls, and even then, it's happened maybe once or twice.

That's why I like how it is now:

It's an automatic warning if it's not on purpose.
It's automatic penalties if you're doing it frequently enough.

I think it's handled just about as well as it could be.

We could argue 'frequency of infraction' and 'degree of penalty' parameters, but obviously some competent people have already looked into it and set a line that probably resembles logic.
it's amazing how you people talk about those virtual rating points like they are of some value... It's not like someone would get into depression (maybe someone would) by logging in one day and seeing that his rating dropped 500 points. To be honest I wouldn't care much, I would just keep playing. So that rating point penalty is not bringing really something significant into chess players lives. The only right penalty is getting banned, first time few minutes, second time hour, third time few hours, and probably fourth time a day, a week and eventually goodbye.
What about aborts becuae you realize you don't have the time, or it was an accident? (it's easy to misclick on small screens if you're not being careful)

And the second suggestion is really bad.

By the way, if you abort too many games in a row you can be banned.
